BUSH BEAT: January 2007

MAVALA ORPHAN PROJECT OPENS

Due to generous donors in 2006, our Mozambican staff was able to open our first remote feeding station in Balama County. This station will assist the estimated 250 orphans in a remote area north of MAVALA, which is 11 miles north of our mission.

For over 2 years, it has been our desire to reach out to the orphans in the super remote villages of Balama. YOUR LOVE GIFTS & PRAYERS have made this possible! These orphans, many under 8 years of age, & their guardians, (grandmothers or aunts), live up to 22 miles from our main mission. Way too far for them to walk in every 2 weeks for food.

On Friday, Jan. 5th, our 10 man crew handed out over 1.5 tons of corn, beans, salt, & soap to 176 orphans in 3 hours. Up to 100 additional orphans, who failed to receive the message of our give out, are expected to come in for food on Jan. 19th, which is our next distribution date. Your gifts also provided them with notebooks, a pen, & a pencil, so they can attend their village school when it starts in late January.

Their heart warming smiles said it all, as many of the kids are suffering mild to moderate malnutrition. It was sad to see many wearing filthy rags for clothes. THREE DOLLARS would provide each child with a new shirt & shorts or skirt. Total cost for 250 orphans would be $750. We have local seamstresses with foot pedal sewing machines who would make the cloths if we can provide the materials.

RESCUE GOAL FOR 2007 IS 1,500 ORPHANS & MALNOURISHED CHILDREN

Total orphans & underprivileged children you are assisting as of this
letter: Balama District: 512 children That number is expected to reach 600+ by February due to the new Mavala feeding station.

OPERATION RESCUE IN MELUCO COUNTY is caring for 240 children.

GRAND TOTAL: 752 children

HEAVY RAINS BADLY DAMAGE THE BALAMA ROAD

On January 2nd, a massive rain storm took out a 6 yard section of road over 6 foot deep, leaving a large hole that would swallow any pick-up. Men worked a full day to make a bypass through a nearby field so that pick-ups could get to civilization. Rains have been very heavy throughout December, which has greatly hindered our food distribution programs.
We are praying that the road isn't wiped out further as continuous heavy rains are expected during January & February.

MELUCO BRIDGE COMPLETED

In early December, we eagerly drove across the new bridge over the 40 yard river bed that we'd been driving through for the last 5 months. Without this bridge, we would have been unable to get to our Meluco orphan project from Dec. to April. Our Project Coordinator, Sylvai, & Pastor Albino continue to attend to the 240 orphans in that area with weekly Bible Studies & food distributions. I'm very happy with the progress we have made there.

SOUTH DAKOTA VISITORS

Nate Ovenden & Jeremy Iverson, experienced short term missionaries from Souix Falls, S. Dakota, are here for a month to minister to our orphans & learn first hand about long term missions. Their desire is to dedicate their lives to full time missions once they finish their Youth Ministers Degrees at Souix Falls University. They've been a big hit with our teenage boys & Sunday School class as they minister to the children through songs & dramas.

BUSH BUNNY TO VISIT AUSTRIA

I'll leave Mozambique on Jan. 14th to attend a 2 week Christian Retreat for full time missionaries in Austria. After 16 years on the field, it's time to pull back, recharge my spiritual batteries, & receive a refreshing from the Lord. In my absence, I ask that you keep O.U.'s Associate Director, Eric Dry, in your prayers. He will be handling this awesome program while I am gone. I'll arrive in Houston, TX on Feb. 6th & will leave April 9th.
