My 7 state tour was wonderful! It filled my heart with joy to meet so
many people with a heart for our orphans. As you receive this, I will be
“in the air”, headed back to Mozambique on April 14th.
THANK YOU to all who hosted me, as I really appreciated the royal
treatment I was given everywhere I stayed.
YOUR LOVE GIFTS will be changing lives in 2009.
New programs and more than 25 visitors will bring the love of Jesus to many
little ones in this year.
BEANS OR BUST!
JUNE is food buying month for our orphans.
Our BEAN fund needs urgent help. A poor harvest means HIGH prices this year.
Beans provide the ONLY PROTEIN for our orphans.
Bean sponsors are needed by May as the short supply means prices will go
up soon.
Bean cost in April: $660/ton or 30 CENTS/POUND
One child needs 101 lbs. (46 Kg) of beans/year to stay healthy.
Beans for 1 child: $30/YEAR (R 270/year)
TOTAL NEEDED: 1,100 bean sponsors at $30/child or $33,000 total
NEW STAFF & VISITORS COMING—YEAH!
At least 25 visitors are coming to Balama to give us a hand from June to
November.
FULL TIME WATER WELL DRILLING will begin in May with the help of Wikkie
DuPlessis from S. Africa, thanks to a sponsorship by VOX MINISTRIES.
VOX MINISTRY PARTNERS WITH US
VOX (Greek for voice) Ministries is dedicated to being a “VOICE FOR THOSE
WHO HAVE NO VOICE,” in this world. They are now partnering with O.U. to
bring clean water to the remote villages of Mozambique.
1. VOX has committed to sponsoring 75% of the cost of 16 water wells to
be drilled in the next 12 months. A gift of $2,700/water well.
2. VOX will bring 3 teams of visitors to Balama in July who are trained in
drilling & Community Development skills. This will “kick off” our joint
water well drilling program.
3. Included in these water well sponsorships is missionary support for a
qualified missionary to DRILL FULL TIME. (Wikkie from S. Africa)
WATER WELL COSTS FOR 2009 is $3,600/WELL
This provides the following:
Pump, $2,000
Fuel, labor, casing, & drilling costs, $1,600/well
THANKS TO VOX’S PARTNERSHIP, our friends can now bring clean water to the
children of Mozambique for only $900/water well.

NEEDED: 6 sponsors at $900 will complete our portion of the 16 wells!
THE WATER WELL SPONSOR’S NAME will be carved into the cement base of the
water well that they sponsored.
HELP US REDUCE THE DEATH TOLL from cholera & dysentery. Contaminated
water killed over 400 mothers whose children are now in our program.
DIESEL TREE TO BREAK THE POVERTY CYCLE
Mozambique has land and many people without jobs. Agriculture is the one
thing all villagers understand as they survive because of their farming
skills.
OUR GOAL: Enable the teenage orphans and widows in our program to become
self sufficient within the next 5 years by raising a crop they can sell.
Find a need and meet it. The locals need FUEL for lighting lanterns in the
village huts.
The 160,000 people living in the 2 counties our programs serve, have no
light and few can afford kerosene at $1/liter.
In March, Eric & our Moz. team planted 1,653 Jatropha Nut Trees at our
Balama mission. The nut from this small, fast growing “bush type” tree
yields bio-diesel, which burns in kerosene lanterns to provide light.
The “diesel tree”, as it is commonly known, grows rapidly in tropical or
semi-tropical areas, & doesn’t mind substandard soils. It yields nuts
within 1 year & reaches maximum yield in 5 years. The oil from the nut is
easily extracted with a hand press, & burns without further refining in
kerosene lanterns.
OUR GOAL: Provide Jatropha Nut Trees to the orphans and widows, and train
them in small business management.
HOES & MACHETTES NEEDED ($10 gift) for the kids to clean their fields.
Over 1,000 orphans and widows want to join this “J NUT” program.
TEN DOLLARS gives an orphan a chance to make a living.
We need to order them by July, so they can prepare their fields for the
planting season.
THE LOVE OF JESUS IS BRINGING HOPE TO OUR FAMILY
BUSH BIKERS FOR CHRIST HAVE WORN OUT THEIR WHEELS
The 26 Bush Bikers (village evangelists) have worn out their bicycles!
These teams of men and women traveled over 3,000 miles on their bikes in the
last 2 years to spread God’s word to the children in remote villages.
Working 5 days/week, they cover 32 villages with the Gospel of Jesus
Christ.
$120 gift for a new bike puts an evangelist back on the road.
16 bikes were donated by members of the All Around Cowboy Church, Sealy, TX.
3 bikes by the Sportsman Restaurant, Eagle Lake, TX
1 bike by the Ogden Family, New Braunfels, TX
NEEDED: 6 bikes & our team will be back in action!
TRUE SERVICE HEARTS FOR JESUS
The donor supporting the BBC evangelists went to be with Jesus last year.
In November, the funding stopped that supported each of the 26 BBC men &
women with a $75/month love gift. The program was temporarily halted
while we prayed and searched for another donor. The BBC team met privately
in December and decided to work anyway, showing their true love for Jesus &
the village children. Our Balama missionary team was so touched by their
love for the village kids, that we voted to release part of our emergency
corn reserve. This would help the BBC members to feed their families till
another donor could be found. They have now worked 4 months for a few
bags of corn. A few donations have been received, but it’s not enough to
support all of them till the end of the year.
$75/MONTH (R675) supports a BBC evangelist & his family.
