BUSH BEAT: July 2007IN MEMORY OF SAMUEL Our month began with the difficult challenge of having one of our teens face fatal complications from malaria. Malaria is one of the top 3 killers in all of Africa.
Samuel, a 16 year old in 9th grade, suffered a bad case of malaria. He was treated, & we thought all was fine. He failed to tell anyone that he was having abdominal pain, & his urine was decreasing. Two days after his urine stopped altogether, he became too sick to hide it any longer. We rushed him to the hospital in Balama where he was diagnosed with severe anemia & renal failure, both complications of malaria. He was transferred to the regional hospital the next day, but Mozambique has no dialysis capabilities. His treatment was limited to trying to correct his anemia with blood transfusions in hopes that his kidneys would respond. NORTH CAROLINA TEAM PRAYS TO SEE ELEPHANTS! On July 5th, the NC team was due to fly back to the USA. On our way to the Pemba airport, we diverted to the Op. Rescue mission station (a 6 hr. drive), to have a party for the orphans. During the 3rd hr. of the drive, Ashley stated she wanted to see elephants. I told them that in the many trips I'd made to this area, I'd never seen an elephant, only the evidence of their passing, (soccer ball size droppings on the road). About 30 minutes later, the Lord gave us all a treat when we spotted 2 elephants about 100 yards away in a corn field. All we could see were their rear ends as they were tearing up corn plants & throwing them over their backs! Since the cornfield had been harvested, I'm sure they were not happy at finding no corn to eat. As we passed that field on our way out that afternoon, all we found was their "evidence" on the road. They'd left a wheelbarrow full of their soccer balls in the road to remind us they really had been there! NC TEAM HELPS TO RESCUE A WIDOW WITH LEPROSY After the children's party that morning, our team set out to rescue a widow & her 2 orphaned grandchildren. Leprosy is a disease that destroys small parts of the body such as fingers & toes. This widow had lost all her fingers & toes making it very difficult to survive. She could barely walk on her toeless feet, & with only her thumbs remained on her hands, holding anything was difficult. Her granddaughters, ages 6 & 10, were doing all the cooking & chores around the house. She desperately needed help as her mud hut was falling down around them. Sylvia, Director of Op. Rescue, tried to bring her in by bicycle, but she kept falling off since she couldn't hold on. A helicopter or a 4 wheel drive pick-up truck were the only solutions. Since we are a little short on helicopters, we had to try to use my pick-up. There's an old African saying that "if you can drive a Land Rover down a trail, you can call it a road". Well, I didn't have a Land Rover, so my King Cab 4 wheel drive pick-up was put to the test! Driving through thick brush, which is known lion country, caused all of us some "stress", but the worst of it was the river crossing. Floods had washed out the 40 yard long bridge, so we had to take the "bypass" through the river bed. Even with a 13 inch drop off into the river bed, my truck made it. You've heard of the old song, "over the river & through the woods, to grandma's house we go". That day, it became reality to all of us! The 7 miles out to her home took an hour, with the return going a little faster. All of us, including the widow & her granddaughters, were very happy to make it out without a flat or animal problems. The entire family immediately benefited from your generosity as they entered their new home. They were overwhelmed when they received blankets, cooking pots, plates, cups, & new clothing. All of them are doing fine, & the girls are now in school.
Our new water well drilling rig is in it's shipping container & awaiting shipping. Many friends in Texas have worked hard to fill the remaining space in the container with children's clothing, shoes, & sewing material. As soon as the shipping documents are finalized, the container will be on it's way to Mozambique. We hope to receive it by the end of Oct. BLESSINGS ABOUND FOR OPERATION RESCUE Very generous donors have blessed us with much needed food & equipment for our orphan projects.
FIRST, we thank the LORD for our quota of 400+ tons of corn & beans which is IN THE BARN. Beans were scarce, but God's angels worked overtime to bring them to us from all corners of the county. It was nothing short of a miracle to see it all happen in 5 weeks time! On July 27th, Eric installed the new maize mill for grinding the corn for the widows at the Operation Rescue site. Each time we distribute the food to the orphans in our remote feeding stations, they receive a Bible lesson complete with Bible story pictures (donated by pre-school teacher from Baytown, TX). The harvest is RIPE & our pastors needed a way to begin planting churches in these remote villages. The Lord told me last year, that if we would step out & DO what HE told us to do, that our needs would be met. HE HAS OVERWHELMED US THIS YEAR WITH HIS LOVE & BLESSINGS FOR OUR KIDS!
